29 May The Big 3 Nutritional Values Compared: Beyond Meat, Lightlife and PC Undeniable Burgers
*Nutritional Content: Dr. Pamela Fergusson RD
It’s 2019 and it’s vegan burger madness in Canada!
In supermarkets and shops throughout the country, you can buy delicious, juicy, vegan burgers ready for your grill.
This has many people asking themselves; what is the nutritional value of these new plant-based patties?
We broke it down for you!
Introducing the Burgers:
The Beyond Burger – Beyond Meats
The Beefless Undeniable Burger – President’s Choice
Lightlife Burger – Lightlife Foods
No surprises here, these burgers are not exactly health foods; they are high in fat and sodium.
However, they do pack an impressive amount of protein and they are good sources of key minerals too.

|Sodium||380 mg||540 mg||360 mg|

The PC Undeniable is slightly healthier than the competition, with the lowest fat and sodium of the three burgers.
In terms of micronutrients, PC and Lightlife are both fortified with nutrients including B12 and Zinc, while the Beyond is not. Those micronutrients can be hard to find on a vegan diet, so that is good news.
That extra fat in Beyond and Lightlife does, however, contribute to the premium feel of the product, and gives the burgers that sizzle we all love.
Those with a keen eye for label reading may have picked up that Lightlife reports 5 mg of cholesterol on the nutrition label of it’s burger. As cholesterol is only found in animal foods, this has caused concern among vegans, who wonder if the product is actually entirely plant-based.
We reached out to Lightlife, who told us the following:
“This product is indeed vegan and does not contain cholesterol. However, due to strict CFIA regulations around fat content, we are required to declare a minimum 5mg of cholesterol”
This does not seem to make sense, as both PC and Beyond Meat are able to label their products correctly as having 0mg of cholesterol.
However, Lightlife has assured us that their product is vegan.
