18 Mar Selam Vegan Ethiopian & Eritrean | Bloorcourt | 812 Bloor St W
1 Location. 2 Restaurants.
Both Restaurants are open Tues – Sun 5 – 10 pm.
Though they share the same kitchen Pero himself prepares Selam Vegan food separately early in the morning, to ensure the separation of food.
Selam Vegan menu is then served downstairs. Your choice of plate service or buffet.
Buffet the ever popular choice!
Selam Vegan is a unique spot.
Like the food, It’s appearance is quite vibrant and like the owner and team, it has a welcoming, jazzy touch, like that of a Chicago speakeasy.
I totally dig it.
Selam means “peace” in Ethiopian so the name basically means peaceful vegan.
Turns out Pero is a pretty peaceful fella and insisted on personally preparing a plate for me from the buffet.
The vibrancy of these dishes is incredible.
You are quite literally eating a rainbow of flavour and texture.
Red Lentils, Kale & Collard, Split Pea, Spicy Squash, Beets, Chick Pea, Sweet Potato.
All very healthy and very satisfying.
I felt terrific after eating.
There was also a traditional Ethiopian coffee ceremony.
It doesn’t get any more authentic than this and it all starts from scratch.
You can imagine the aroma wafting from the freshly roasted Yirgacheffe coffee beans…..
I had to take pause and ask myself why I haven’t been here before.
A. I LOVE Ethiopian Food
B. Bloorcourt is ma’ hood.
C. Selam is very affordable, healthy and welcoming.
All in all, I was blown away by Selam Vegan and it was a remarkably vibrant, fun and flavourful experience.
Have you been?
