08 Aug Saigon Lotus
PBB: Saigon Lotus is a vegetarian/vegan Vietnamese restaurant located in an unpretentious building on the lower east side of Kensington Market. Specialized in vegan pho along with rice and noodle dishes. My friend Christina and I decided to pop in for lunch.
CS: We started lunch with a steamed rice roll filled with portobello mushrooms and mock meat for $5. It was garnished with fried onions and mint leaves and had a silky-soft consistency that I really enjoyed.
The second item we ordered was a Vegan Combo #1 for $10 which came with three distinct dishes and a clear broth soup.
Each were unique and flavourful in different ways. The first was crispy fried tofu covered in a fresh salsa, the second was more of an earthy miso stew with root vegetables, and the third was a mixture of tofu and “beefy” seitan – it was spectacular!
Texturally impressive and the taste was superb. I would definitely order this combo again.
The third dish we ordered was the BBQ Vegan Meat and Crispy Roll with steamed vermicelli, lettuce, mint, cucumber, sprout, carrot, onion, and crushed peanut for only $9.
We both agreed it was our favourite dish of the day.
PBB: Something remarkable about Saigon Lotus is just how good a job they do replicating the textures and flavours with their mock meat. Every dish tasted unique and the value for your dollar here is just bonkers.
One very notable item was the “pork belly” which was so close to the original, I found it unsettling – a layered mix of seitan and mock fat which was alarmingly similar to the real thing.
Overall we were both delighted with the menu and are looking forward to trying their hot soups on a cool fall night.
Until then, we’ll see you at the next meal!!
